Tennis sponsors serve up big prizes for Wilson 150 000

There is also a doubles tournament for both men and women.

The Gauteng East Tennis Centre in Lakefield was teaming with budding young tennis stars from May 31 as the Wilson 150 000 Tennis Challenge got underway.

The Tennis South Africa-sanctioned tournament, spread over two weekends until June 9, features players in the junior (boys and girls u-14) as well as men’s and women’s open categories.

Sporting equipment giant Wilson, the sponsors of the seventh edition of the tournament, has raised the stakes significantly this year by upping the prize purse to R150 000 – an increase of R50 000 from last year.

The tournament owes its continued success to brothers Brad and Brett Summers, directors of the Golf Racket, the distributors of Wilson products throughout South Africa, who continue to back the event financially.

Brad says the tournament has grown from strength to strength and with the rise in popularity it was inevitable that the prize money also kept pace.

The juniors and women’s singles is being contested from a round of 32, while the men’s event is a 64-draw.

Graduating to the big league. Defending u-14 boys champion Lwazi Ngwenya.

In line with international trends, particularly in Grand Slam tournaments and as part of the prize fund increase, the organisers allocated an equal prize money pool to both the men’s and women’s events.

The respective winners will both net R20 000, while the women’s doubles event has also been increased to bring it in line with the men.

Tournament director Lorna Krog says not only is the prize money a big incentive for the participants, but the placement on the local tennis calendar also attracts a good deal of South African collegiate players who spend the traditional American summer vacation at home.
