Seven suspected illegal miners arrested in Daveyton

The suspects are expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court soon

Seven suspected illegal miners were arrested on May 31 at Chris Hani Extension One in Daveyton around 11am.

The success came after the EMPD SWAT, K9, Public Order Policing, Equestrian and Community Liaison units responding swiftly to a tip-off received from a reliable source.

EMPD media liaison officer Kobeli Mokheseng said at about 10.30am the EMPD raided a shack where a 31-year-old male was found mining illegally, before he took officers not far from his hut, where six more men were arrested.

The six men, aged between 16 and 39, were found with mining equipment, welding equipment, chemicals and a few portable wash-basins full of processed dust.

They were transported to the Daveyton Police Station with their equipment and charged under the Illegal Mining Act.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court soon.
