More Scouts and Cubs needed

The best part is that parents can get involved too by raising funds for the running costs of the pack and troop.

The Fourth Benoni Cubs and Scouts held an open day for recruits recently at the 4th Benoni Scout Hall in hope to encourage more youngsters to join.

The day consisted of fun activities provided by the Cub Pack and Scout Troop and home-made goodies on sale to raise funds.

All former Cubs and Scouts were also invited to view the display of memorabilia.

“We need about 24 Cubs and 24 Scouts,” said Scout group leader Shane Gardiner.

“At the moment, we have nine cubs (ages seven to 11) and seven scouts (ages 11 to 18).”

There is one adult for every six Cubs and one adult for every 12 Scouts.

Lorna Jones is the Pack Scouter (Akela), which is the pack leader for the Cubs, and Chris Jackman is the Troop Scouter (Caveman), which is the leader for the Scouts.

“The Scouts have been active in Benoni since 1917,” Gardiner said.

“In the 1950s a new category opened for air Scouts.”

Scout leaders are searching for strengths in the youngsters and hope to develop it.

Scouts can be divided into three groups: land, sea and air.

Scouting aims to:

• develop leadership skills;

• develop character;

• train them to become responsible members of society; and

• enhance health in body, mind and spirit.
