The Benoni police, under the command of Brig Ntakuseni Lukhwareni, would like to warn residents to always be alert and vigilant when using public transport, specifically taxis.
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said it has come to the police’s attention that there is a taxi operating in the late afternoons around the Benoni area.
“The white Quantum has three or four occupants, including the driver, and people boarding the taxi are robbed while inside,” said Sekele.

“The latest incident occurred on May 29 at about 4.20pm, where a female boarded white quantum on 2nd Street, Northmead.”
Sekele said there were four males inside the taxi, which she thought were also passengers.
“As they continued driving the woman suspected that something was wrong and immediately asked to be dropped off.
“The taxi did not stop and one of the males slapped and ordered her to lie down, she was then assaulted and her handbag containing her belongings was taken,” she said.
The spokesperson said while the woman was lying down inside the taxi it stopped.
The suspects asked for her bank PIN.
One of the suspects jumped out of the vehicle, she heard them shouting that she doesn’t have money in her account and was then forced to call her mother to transfer money into her account.
“The victim did as she was told but asked her mother to send money with her sister whom was waiting for her at Heidelberg Road.
“They proceeded there, took the money from her sister, drove with her and dropped her in an unknown location.”
A case of robbery with a weapon was opened at Benoni Police Station.
Sekele said they are pleading to the community to work hand in hand with the police and also report all crime, no matter how small it is.
“Criminals are opportunists, every chance they get, they use.”
No arrests have been made and the police are urging victims of this gang to come forward and report what happened to them.
