Man dies on Cloverdene Road

The Benoni SPCA is still in shock after responding to a call in Cloverdene, which led to an alleged hijacking and a man being electrocuted to death on May 11.

According to SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore, their driver Seun Mahedi received a phone call from the emergency number at 11pm, where he was asked to fetch a sick dog in Equator Street, Cloverdene.

“Once he arrived at the location, the man tried to lure him onto a dirt road where he claimed the dog was on, but Mahedi asked him to bring the dog to his vehicle instead,” said Finnemore.

“While waiting for the man’s return, Mahedi phoned his friend who was on his way back from Daveyton to help him as he suspected something was not right.”

The friend, who had a passenger in his vehicle, met Mahedi and was parked behind him as they awaited the man’s return.

Finnemore said the man returned with three other men, one of whom was armed and tried to take the vehicle. That is when Mahedi and his friend sped off in their vehicles as they were chased by the four men in a black Golf with no number plates.

“During the chase, Mahedi and his friend knocked into two different poles,” Finnemore explained.

“When the passenger in the friend’s vehicle stepped out, he stepped on a live wire and was electrocuted to death.”

Mahedi was taken to hospital, but was released the next day with minor bruises.

The SPCA vehicle, which they relied on to collect stray and unwanted animal’s every day, was a write-off.

No comment was received from the Crystal Park police.
