Learners from Wattville celebrate International Museum Day

Educator from Lesabe Primary School in Wattville Lovely Mnguni said it is important for the children to learn and appreciate where they come from.

The Ekurhuleni metro took various school learners from Benoni on a guided tour of the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct in Wattville on May 18 to celebrate International Museum Day and to raise awareness of museums as an important means of cultural exchange, which was also the theme for this year’s celebration.

Learners were educated by various museologists in Gauteng about the existence of museums in order to try and change the community’s perspectives on museums and visiting them to trace and learn about one’s cultural and traditional history.

The day was filled with fun, interactive activities and tour guides from the Maropeng Museum were especially interesting as the learners were able to find out more about the origins of humankind.

They also brought along replicas of the original skulls from the museum for learners to examine.

Mamello Nthoana, school president and matric learner from Ephen Mamkeli Secondary School, said the tour was very educational.

“We learnt more about physical science, life sciences and history all in one tour and it was a lot of fun,” said Mamello.

There was a question and answer session after each presentation with prizes, and to end the day learners enjoyed a delicious lunch.
