Couple gives pup the life she deserves

They decided to make the dog comfortable and begin the two-and-a-half hour drive to a veterinary clinic in Benoni to get the animal the help it needed.

What could have been a fatal ending for a six-month-old Jack Russell turned into an adventure that took her from Rustenburg to Benoni and later to her forever home in the Free State.

Kerrie Low and her fiancé, Martin Smith, were on their way back from Rustenburg, along a 20km dirt road, when they spotted what they thought could be a baby buck. It was actually an extremely weak dog lying in the road. It could not even put up a fight when they picked her up.

Once they got to Benoni, the dog was put on a drip as she was malnourished and emaciated.

Kerrie said they so badly wanted the dog, which they named Finfoot, to make it through the night and it did, starting her journey to recovery.

What Penny looked like when they found her on a dirt road in Rustenburg.

While Finfoot recovered at the vet, Kerrie used a social media platform to share the story of the dog and also try and find a home for her.

The response was overwhelming, Kerrie said.

Gina and Matthew Shepherd, a couple from the Free State, have rescued, fostered and adopted dogs for a very long time and when Gina saw the post about Finfoot, there was something that drew her to the dog and she called Kerrie, desperate to adopt this little pup.

As fate would have it, Matthew would be in Johannesburg for business and could therefore bring Finfoot home.

One of Gina’s close friends works at animal rescue organisation and was able to do a home check, which put Kerrie’s mind at ease.

Kerrie and Martin drove to Bedfordview to meet with Matthew to hand Finfoot over and the only way to describe the moment was as very emotional, Kerrie said.

“It was hard to say goodbye to this precious soul.”

Four hours later, Finfoot had settled into her new home in the Free State and she was even given a new name, Penny.

According to Gina, she is already addicted to cheese, basking in the sun and has started wagging her tail.

“Penny is living the life she so richly deserves now that she is able to realise what love is all about,” said Kerrie.
