Free blood pressure testing available in May

It is World Hypertension Day on May 17.

Here are some startling facts from the Southern African Hypertension Society:

• South Africa has the highest rate of high blood pressure in people age 50 and over for any country in the world, at any point in history.

• One in two South Africans has high blood pressure.

• Some of the highest blood pressure levels have been recorded in Sub Saharan-Africa.

• Seventy per cent of these adults don’t even know they have high blood pressure.

• Every three seconds someone dies from the consequences of high blood pressure.

• You don’t feel ill with high blood pressure – until you have a cardiac event, like a stroke, heart attack or even die.

• It’s called the silent disease for a good reason.

Deaths caused by high blood pressure are preventable.

The first step in this fight is to have your blood pressure tested regularly.

This month there will be free testing for blood pressure at various pharmacies and other locations.
