Metro’s response to Actonville Flats issues

Negligence claims include structural damage to the flats and dampened walls due to water damage, rubbish build-ups and other issues of contention between residents and the metro.

In the City Times edition dated April 4 it was reported that council flats in Actonville are allegedly being neglected by the metro.

Ekurhuleni divisional head for communication and media relations Nhlanhla Cebekhulu has since responded with the following:

“An assessment of the structure for Delhi and Karachi Courts was conducted and the metro is in the process of awarding a contractor for these works.

“Ekurhuleni appoints cleaning and garden service providers on a month-to-month contract.

“The metro intends to appoint service providers for a prolonged period through a fair and transparent tender process.

“It should be noted, besides the metro’s responsibility to clean, the residents have the responsibility to keep their common living areas tidy.

“The globes (in the corridors) were replaced on numerous occasions.

“However, the community vandalises and removes them.

“It is a societal responsibility that the councillor (Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail) should embrace educating the occupants on the importance of taking care of the properties.

“The metro is finalising the appointment of service providers to ensure minor maintenance of the said lights.

“Ekurhuleni has prioritised refurbishment of all its properties, including the ones in Actonville.

“However, the financial resources to do extensive refurbishments all at once in all of its properties are limited.

“The councillor has been informed about this matter and she is being engaged in all the projects taking place in Actonville.

“The revenue generated from council flats is also not enough to ensure continuous maintenance. This is due to the fact that rates are kept low.”

When asked about the quality of workmanship provided by the contractors, Cebekhulu said properties are occupied and the metro has noted incidents of vandalism by the occupants even during the course of construction work.
