The plight of the many elderly in Benoni who are struggling to survive financially on a daily basis will be highlighted at a music fund-raiser on May 11.

The “open mic” event is being organised by local musician and founder of Rynfield-based The Songwriters’ Attic Claudia Cox-Norton.

“It’s a compassion campaign aimed at helping senior citizens in need in our community,” Claudia explained.

The idea was sparked by her recent interaction in a supermarket with a pensioner who didn’t have enough money to pay for the few basic grocery items she needed.

“This really touched me deeply and made me realise there are probably hundreds of pensioners in our city in the same situation.

“I was determined to make a difference so decided to use my passion – music – to collaborate with other musicians and raise awareness about the aged who are struggling in Benoni,” Claudia said.

The entrance “fee” for the show is a care hamper for a pensioner.

According to the Rynpark Association for the Aged, these items are a good guideline to what such a care hamper should include:

• Tea

• Coffee

• Milk

• Sugar

• Packet of sweets

• Biscuits

• Soap

• Shampoo

• Body lotion

• Toilet paper

• Face cloth

• Washing powder

• With winter on its way, items like gloves, a scarf, beanie and socks can also be considered.

“Our goal is to collect a minimum of 100 care packages, so come on Benoni help us to achieve this!” Claudia said.

The event takes place at Night Owl Restaurant, 260 Uys Road, Rynfield, from 1pm.

“The support has been amazing but we welcome any other artists who would like to perform at the event to contact me,” Claudia said.

“And of course we invite the public to come along and to enjoy an afternoon of ‘local is lekker’ quality music and to take this opportunity to spoil a senior citizen – remember to bring your hamper!”

The care hampers will be distributed to the elderly most in need with the guidance of the Rynpark Association for the Aged.
