Concerns raised over road safety for elderly

Among the concerns listed were a lack of zebra crossings for pedestrians, especially on Pretoria Road and Parker and Lessing Streets, overgrown trees blocking road signs and warning signs, such as speed precautions, and the timing of traffic lights.

CEO for Rynpark Homes for the elderly in Rynfield Marius Botha recently raised a concern with Ward 24 Clr Kabelo Mahonke, stating road safety for the residents in the area was concerning.

In an email addressed to the councillor, Botha points out numerous challenges the elderly face, with a specific emphasis on a lack of zebra crossings, new pedestrian boards and proper time intervals for safe crossing for residents walking with aides.

The City Times met with Botha following the complaint.

Among the concerns listed were a lack of zebra crossings for pedestrians, especially on Pretoria Road and Parker and Lessing Streets, overgrown trees blocking road signs and warning signs, such as speed precautions, and the timing of traffic lights.

“Several residents have already complained about the traffic situation in the area and have seen a number of drivers skipping red traffic lights,” said Botha.

“We are being proactive now before something happens.”

Botha also advised the corner of Struben and Parker streets in front of Rynpark 6 is also “very dangerous” as there is only a two-way stop and the streets require a three-way stop for the roads that intersect.

“Hawkers in the area, especially toward the shopping complex on Pretoria Road, are also a challenge.

“We try our best to keep the area clean at all times and the general upkeep of the area needs attention.

“We also need more of an EMPD presence.”

Mahonke was contacted for comment.
