Architectural journey of churches at U3A

Menache, who is formally from Belgium, has resided in South Africa for 51 years and is the co-author of the self-published books Church Tourism SA, Platteland Pilgrimage and 101 Country Churches.

Members of the University of the Third Age (U3A) were treated to an architectural journey of church buildings in South Africa on the morning of March 12 as hobby enthusiast Philippe Menache shared his knowledge of 40 years on the topic with the group.

“The focus of the talk is on the history and heritage of churches across the country and is not based on religion but rather aesthetics,” explained Menache.

“I am not an architect so this was more a hobby (of 40 years) than a profession that turned into reaching interest groups such as the U3A with presentations on the historical values of churches.

“There are so many beautiful churches in the country and I would like to impart this knowledge with others.”

Menache said he speaks on a collection of churches countrywide and educates groups on the churches’ completion, style and merits.

Making mention of churches across Ekurhuleni on the day, the hobby enthusiast added that the St Dunstan’s Cathedral situated on Woburn Avenue was built in 1894 and had a rich history behind it.

“In 1904 it was a stone church and then in 1969 it became fairly modern as parts were demolished and then refurbished.

“There was some stonework that remained and in 1999 the church was promoted to cathedral status.”

He added one of the oldest church buildings in the country is situated in the Mother City.

“Groote Kerk was the first church erected in Cape Town and still stands today.”

According to Menache the church was built in 1704.

U3A members were intrigued by the presentation on the day.
