The Friends of the Benoni Library hosted their books bash at the Benoni Library on March 1 and 2.

Committee member Ann Smith said the committee is 16 years old and has helped to put thousands of new and second-hand books on the shelves of the Benoni Library.

“Unfortunately, in the last two to three years, we’ve seen a drastic drop in the number of members of the public coming through to support our initiative,” said a concerned Smith.

“Every cent we collect from our book bashes goes towards filling the library with newer books.

“It’s going to be difficult to keep this project going if this trend continues, and that would be awfully sad.

“We are requesting the public, particularly the youth, to visit us during our book bashes and browse through our selection of books.

“We have a vast collection that ranges from cooking to religion, history, business, travel, music, fitness, fiction, non-fiction and every other possible genre.”

Smith added that members of the public can be part of the Friends by paying a membership fee of R50 a year.

“The membership fee includes benefits such as allowing the family to take out double the amount of books that is usually permitted.”

The book bash brought in a total of R R3 200 with the next bash date yet to be announced.
