Flying squad officer suffers gunshot wound

The suspects are still at large.

A Benoni Flying Squad member was injured after he sustained a gunshot wound to the leg in crossfire after an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) heist at a business in Daveyton Mall on Sunday (March 3).

According to the SAPS cluster spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, two CIT security guards were inside the business when five armed suspects arrived on the scene.

“The suspects entered the shop and disarmed the security guards after pointing firearms at them,” explained Sekele.

“They then took a trolley filled with cash that the guards were busy collecting.

“They proceeded to run out of the mall with the trolley into Hlakwana Street, which is next to the mall, with the driver of the CIT van chasing them.

“While fleeing the scene they fired shots as a means to clear the public from their path.

“Members of the BFS were patrolling the area and heard shots being fired.

“They arrived promptly on scene and exchanged fire with the suspects.

“In the crossfire, a BFS member was shot in the leg.

“The suspects fled the scene leaving the trolley of cash behind.

“No civilians were injured during the shoot-out.”
