BCPF needs your eyes and ears

Since the inception, Brandon Scott said countless arrests have been made, starting from the first week of the project’s existence.

“Fast”, “instant” and “responsive” are the words best used to describe the CPF Benoni Community Radio Network (BCRN) – and the CPF is looking for more eyes and ears on the ground.

Established in 2013, the idea was the brainchild of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) as a platform to communicate with CPF members and patrollers.

How it works:

• Once the two-way radio is purchased, it can be used to report any suspicious activity seen.

• The report will then be broadcast to all CPF members on the network.

• A CPF member will then make contact with you to best assist you in the situation.

• If you cannot contact SAPS, the CPF will do so on your behalf.

“It needs to be noted that this platform should not be used instead of the basic emergency numbers such as 10 111, or contacting the local security provider,” said technical adviser of the Benoni CPF executive committee,” Brandon Scott said.

All you need to do is:

• Make contact with your CPF sector chairperson.

• Fill in the application form to join.

• Purchase a radio and two-way walkie-talkie.

• Let the CPF guide you in tuning the radio to their news feed.

“This form of communication is an effective method to assist the greater Benoni,” Scott said.

“All we need are more members to make this network a bigger success.”

The network already has 600 members since its inception, but the CPF is hoping more Benonians will join in the project so more news is brought to light.

“We do train the members so they understand not to speak when someone else. It’s just basic radio ethics,” Scott explained.

“There was a boy in Airfield who made contact with us using this platform and we responded to the scene where the arrest was made.”

This has been effective.

On February 20, a woman on Hospital Road reported that two men were walking on the street with a television.

“The report came in, SAPS were contacted, they responded to the scene and within six minutes, the suspects were arrested,” Scott said.

“We do not always have good days like this, but the more eyes and ears in Benoni, the faster we can attend to criminal activities.”

Benoni CPF spokesperson, Marinda Beukes, can be contacted on 082 920 1548 for more information about the sector chairperson.
