Police issue warning to motorists using the N12

This came after a case of hijacking was opened at the Benoni SAPS on February 11.

Following several crimes occurring on the N12 behind the Daveyton Railway Station, police have asked motorists to be more vigilant.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the N12, between the Etwatwa and Atlas off-ramps, is becoming a hot spot for criminal activities, which include robberies and hijackings.

This came after a case of hijacking was opened at the Benoni SAPS on February 11.

Sekele said a woman driving a Ford Ranger on the N12 around 7.15am gave three men who were hiking a lift.

“One of the men climbed into the front seat and the other in the backseat,” said Sekele.

“As she was driving, the man in front pulled up the handbrake and one of the men in the back pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the driver.”

She said the man with a firearm told the driver to move to the back seat while the other man who was in the backseat went into the driver’s seat.

“The three men continued to drive and they dropped off the woman at Carnival City.”

Sekele urged motorists to avoid stopping their vehicles when they see something suspicious and to also avoid picking up hitchhikers.

Sekele said motorists who need to stop for whatever reason should try to do so in built-up areas, especially at night.
