Diago returns to school

The Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, said a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened at the Benoni Police Station and it is still under investigation.

After almost two weeks of fighting pains and fractures from being involved in an accident, young Diago de Ascensao will be returning to school on February 18.

 Diago moved to private hospital

The Tom Newby learner (13) was helping at a sports event at Hoërskool Brandwag on February 4 and upon crossing the road to visit a friend, he was knocked by a vehicle, leaving him ‘trapped’ under the vehicle, as an eye witness stated.

Diago was tended to by ER24 paramedic Sanjay Sukdeo and then transported to Tambo Memorial Hospital.

His mother, Angie Hattingh, said the accident occurred after 3pm on Seventh Street.

The family felt Diago was not getting the required care at the hospital and managed to raise funds for him to be transferred to Netcare Linmed Hospital on February 7.

He was discharged on February 12, but the road to recovery is still a long one for the little champ.

“We need to see the doctor every two weeks and visit the wound specialist regularly,” Angie explained.

“Diago has to see the wound specialist because his open wound went septic while he was in hospital and that needs to be taken care of.

“Each consultation fee for the doctor alone is R500.”

The family is reaching out to the community for help in making this road to recovery an easier one for Diago.

Their goal is about R80 000 for medical treatment and consultations.
