Diago moved to private hospital

The family is in need of help for the youngster.

There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for young Diago de Ascensao, who was transferred last night to Netcare Linmed Hospital after being knocked by a vehicle outside Hoërskool Brandwag on February 4.

“We raised enough funds to move Diago from Tambo Memorial Hospital last night (February 7),” said his mother, Angie Hattingh.

The 13-year-old boy is a Tom Newby learner, but was helping at a sports event on the day at Hoërskool Brandwag.

“The event was supposed to end at 4pm, but it finished an hour earlier so Diago and his sister were going to a friend’s house,” Angie said.

“As they crossed the road, a vehicle knocked him.

“A bystander said the children did look both ways before crossing the road and it seemed like the vehicle just appeared.”

A witness said: “We heard a very loud bang, thinking a car hit another car, but on inspection outside, we saw the boy trapped underneath the car that hit him,” the witness said.

“It was horrible – they had to lift the car to get him out.

“On one of the groups that this was shared, someone said they asked a friend of theirs who is a general practitioner, and he said it is a miracle the boy had even survived this.”

The Cloverdene resident was attended to by one of the ER24 paramedic’s on scene, Sanjay Sukdeo.

“He sustained a head injury with multiple abrasions and bruising throughout his body,” Sanjay explained.

The youngster was transported to Tambo Memorial Hospital, but his parents were concerned about him receiving the necessary attention.

According to Angie, Diago had an open wound on his hip that was only cleaned on February 5.

A neurologist still had not been to see him.

A CT scan was done, but the results were not explained to the parents.

Angie said: “The report said fracture of the right occipital bone extending through the lambdoid suture into the right parietal bone. Skull fracture with overlying soft tissue.”

She was uncertain what that meant.

But Benonians opened their hearts and Diago’s parents raised enough funds to pay the deposit at the private hospital, as well as the ambulance to transport him.

“We are so grateful to everyone who just donated to help Diago,” Angie said.

“I also want to say thank you to Sanjay for his assistance, if he was not there and did not advise me, I would not have known what to do after Diago was knocked, he is a good person.”

Diago will still need funds for any treatments he receives at Netcare Linmed Hospital, so the family is asking Benonians for any assistance to pay these bills.

“Financially I can hardly put any petrol in my car and emotionally I feel like I am at a breaking point,” Angie said.

“I went to the Benoni Police Station on Tuesday to open a case and from what I heard, the person who knocked Diago gave a statement on Wednesday.”
