Millions invested into dam wall repairs on Middle Lake

Phase two of the repairs to the dam wall will commence soon

The anticipated cost of the first phase of repairs being done to the dam wall on Middle Lake is approximately R1.8-million to R2-m excluding VAT and will be completed by February 4, this according to City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The completion of the first phase, he said, addressed the risk of potential failure of the dam.

“This includes the cost of construction work as well as professional fees for design and supervision,” said Gadebe.

Gadebe pointed out that the total amount spent on phase one excluded other direct costs incurred by the municipality such as salaries and overtime.

“To put the emergency repair costs into perspective it needs to be mentioned that the replacement value of the Middle Lake Dam wall is estimated between R60-m and R100-m.

“The repair cost is, therefore, a very small percentage of the replacement value.”

With phase one completed, the metro has given the go-ahead for the commencement of phase two to the repairs and outlined what this would entail.

The investigation, design and construction of the repair works of phase two of the emergency repairs to the rest of the spillway will mainly consist of:

• Locating possible cavities under the concrete slab covering the spillway with specialised non-destructive methods.

• Filling of the cavities under the remaining slabs located in the abovementioned areas.

• Re-sealing of the joints between the slabs.

• Other remedial repairs along the rest of the dam wall that will include crack sealing and removal of vegetation.

“Quotations are currently being solicited to do the work as described above,” Gadebe said.

“It is estimated that the work will take a minimum of six months to complete provided everything progresses according to plan and there are no delays such as major floods occurring in the area and other unforeseen failures of any kind.”
