Thousands raised for Greater Benoni Child Welfare

Collections were open until December 25 with 41 cards and R200 cash collected to reach the total.

Various members of the Farrarmere community were able to raise R4 300 over the festive period for the Greater Benoni Child Welfare (GBCW).

Previously it was reported residents banded together by collecting Pick n Pay stickers.

The retailer gave shoppers the opportunity to receive a R5 voucher, in the form of a sticker, for every R150 spent at their tills.

Upon reaching 20 of these stickers, shoppers would receive R100 of their purchase.

According to Farrarmere resident Catherine Marques, a resident on the Farrarmere WhatsApp group suggested members with loose stickers to band together to fill some cards for charitable causes.

Farrarmere resident Janie Kuit, who is on the board of GBCW, requested the cards go to GBCW as they had not received their grant from the government, and were running out of funds.

In November, R1 800 worth of vouchers and R200 to the child welfare, a total of R2 000, was delivered to the welfare.

In addition, a collection for a needy local family took place.

Marques added that two of the residents felt a plea for help on the chat group had been ignored and donated their own full cards to this family.

Elsie Labuschagne, director of GBCW, said the support from the public came at a time when they needed it most.

“We are very thankful for the donation, this will help us a lot,” said the director.

“We will be using the cards to buy groceries for the child and youth centre.”
