Busy New Year for animal rescuers

"Fireworks are terrible and harmful to animals," says Benoni SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore

Approximately 20 strays were brought to the SPCA over the festive period during December 31 and January 1.

Vicky Finnemore, the manager of the Benoni SPCA confirmed that half of these strays were claimed by their owners the next day.

“The use of fireworks was much worse compared to the previous year,” said Finnmore.

“We had to drive out to collect a few strays but most of them were brought in by the public and we would like to thank them for bringing them in despite the unfavourable weather conditions.”

According to Lauren Kelly, the director of the Benoni Animal Rescue Centre (Barc), the use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve were the worst they have experienced compared to the previous year, despite the rainy weather.

Clearly unhappy with locals for persisting to revel in the use of fireworks despite animals rescue organisations such as Barc discouraging this for the sake of animals Kelly said bluntly that “Benoni sucks and the residents suck!”

“I lost count of the number of animals we dropped off at the SPCA.

Animals were injured trying to escape the fireworks and at around 2am we even chased a Pitbull terrier off the N12 but we, unfortunately, lost sight of it.”

“ I blame the local major retailer especially those who promoted the sale of fireworks – it is fireworks that caused this mess!”
