Art lovers converge for first-of-its-kind art exhibition in Benoni

Proceeds from sales on the day were given to the artists.

Benoni High School art teacher Stephanie Geral is changing the landscape for artist exposure in the town and recently organised a feast for the eyes at the Lemongrass restaurant in Western Extension.

This, she said, was organised due to no exclusive exhibition centre available to artists in Benoni.

“My idea behind this is to bring artists and the public together,” explained Geral.

A first-of-its-kind to the local public, some of the artists present on the day and exhibiting their work were Paul Botes, Gerrit van de Stelt and Pam Selkirk.

“Paul was the inspiration behind this idea and he gave me great tips and ideas.

“The art displayed here today is of a very high quality and we hope to collaborate with more artists in Benoni to produce another exhibition early in 2019.

“The artists were also responsible for their own set-ups, which made the exhibition more personal to them.

“I think the artists needed this kind of exposure and through this exhibit we are able to attract different kinds of audiences.

“The aim is to bring art not just to the ‘lookers’ but to the everyday person.”

Artwork prices on the day ranged from R100 to R3 500 and all proceeds from the sales belonged exclusively to the artists.

A kiddie’s art table formed part of the entertainment with dot work for the kids coordinated by Rebecca Morley.
