On December 22, the EMPD conducted Operation Malaisha in which 14 pedestrians were arrested for walking on the freeway on the N12 between Kingsway and Putfontein exits.

The following day, on December 23, during a similar operation, 11 pedestrians were charged with the same offence at the Benoni Police station.
