Martial arts medals galore at World Champs in Portugal

The 2018 World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) World Championships were held in Albufeira, Portugal recently

A delegation of 36 members represented South Africa as the national and presidential team for full contact martial arts.

Three young martial artists from Benoni’s United Martial Arts Dojo achieved excellent results at the Portuguese event.

Mahmood Mahomed (14) won nine world title medals including five gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal.

Ahmad Mahomed (11) brought home nine world title medals too including six gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal.

Salaamah Mahomed (7) won nine world title medals including five gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal.

Salaamah also won the male continuous u-9 division, winning the world title against male athletes.

Sajida Mahomed led the team as the manager.

In total, the 21 South African athletes attained 83 medals at the World Championships consisting of 29 gold medals, 27 silver medals and 27 bronze medals.

“The results were the highest ever achieved for the Full Contact Martial Arts Association,” said the president of the Full Contact Martial Arts Association of South Africa and Lakefield resident, Aslam Mahomed.

“These athletes, the team manager and team leader attained national colours for full contact martial arts through the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).”
