Easterns: ’No citizens and dwellers will be affected’ by Willowmoore Park floodlight tower implosions

The implosion of the towers will commence at 10am on November 19.

Ahead of tomorrow morning’s planned demolition of the two old rear concrete floodlight pylons (closest to Willowmoore High School) at Willowmoore Park, both the demolition company (Wreckers) and the Eastern Cricket Union have said that all will be safe.

Wreckers’ demolition blaster Kyle Perkin, who is heading up the operation, said in a previous article that the demolition job (a simultaneous felled implosion) should only take a few seconds.

This comes after concerns had been raised by the Western Extension Business Association (WEBA) around the safety of residents and their property ahead of the implosion, particularly at the Pauline Davis Court in Harpur Avenue where many elderly residents live.

WEBA also questioned whether the Eastern Cricket Union and the demolition company had followed the correct procedures in notifying the community around the stadium about the blast.

Cassim Suliman, CEO of the Eastern Cricket Union, said in email communication with WEBA that a structural engineer’s report was done on the old pylons and the report received was that the pylons had been declared unsafe as it is cracking up and could collapse which is a safety hazard to the public at large.

“We then sent the report to the Ekurhuleni metro who then advised the Provincial Heritage Resources Authority who advised us to execute the following: Advertise the demolition of the pylon in the local newspaper, which we did twice in the Benoni City Times for notice to the public. Display of the signage around the stadium for public viewing.

“There was a deadline set for the public to respond for any objections, none were received on both the notices issued.

“The heritage authority then gave permission to the metro and to us to demolish the pylons

“Furthermore, the logistics that will be executed will not cause any noise damage or damages to any property, except maybe the inside of the stadium, hence the metro’s disaster management committee are quite happy of the process and will not cause any harm or damages damage to the public at large.”

The planned demolition is scheduled for 10am tomorrow morning, the City Times will have a drone in the air to capture the moment the towers fall.
