Goods worth R1.2-m recovered in Crystal Park

All the recovered good were booked in at Benoni Police Station.

EMPD Tracing Unit members heeded to the alert of dodgy activities taking place at a property in Farrah Street, Crystal Park, and found suspected stolen items worth R1.2-million.

The operation took place on November 9 at around 6pm after the landlord became suspicious of foreign nationals who rented a few rooms.

“Residents’ suspicions were raised when the tenants were only seen at night either delivering goods or collecting them from the rented rooms,” said EMPD Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“Suspicions were strengthened when residents realised that all the windows in the rented rooms were always covered with black plastic.”

Kgasago said the metro police gained access to the room and uncovered sealed boxes of dozens of flat screen television sets, tablets, herbal-based alcohol and spirits liquor.

“Preliminary investigations based on serial numbers on the goods pointed to the goods probably stolen in KwaZulu-Natal from containers at the Durban harbour,” Kgasago explained.

“Within the yard not far from the building, an eight-ton truck loaded with various items was found.”

Kgasago said the tenants were called on their cellphones to explain how the goods got there but failed to turn up.

“Although no arrests were made, in-depth investigations are underway and the police expect to make arrests soon,” he said.

Some of the tablets and alcohol recovered.
