UPDATE: GDE extends placement deadline as thousands still without a school

New deadline given for leaner placements

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) reported yesterday (November 1) that 6 879 learners out of 248 866 for Grades One and Eight 2019 were not placed by the deadline of October 31.

The GDE has, therefore, extended the deadline to November 5 and has urged parents to be patient.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona said the GDE will facilitate necessary consultations with all affected parents.

“Regular SMS notifications will be sent to parents to update them on developments.

“To alleviate pressure from the call centre, an email account has been established, namely Admissions.Hotline@gauteng.gov.za, to which parents can send enquiries regarding placement of their children,” he said.

“Furthermore, all district offices will have their list of schools which will indicate the number of applications received and the status thereof, whether the school is full or there is space available.

“A link will be established on the Online Admission website where the same list of schools will be reflected.”

Late registration will be opened only to parents who did not apply as well as those who did not submit their documents and those who have forfeited their space.

“Parents should take into consideration that some schools receive high volumes of applications and that placement is conducted on the admission criteria, but more so on a first come first serve basis,” Mabona reiterated.

“We are aware that there are learners who are within the proximity of the school that meet the criteria, yet they are still not placed.

“However, districts are assisting with placement of these learners and it may not be at the preferred school.

“Placement at the school of choice is not guaranteed.

“We appeal to parents to be patient and accept their offers of placement rather than not have space at all.

”The GDE thanks parents who applied on time and submitted all relevant documents.”
