Northerns get local bragging rights in cricket derby against Actonville

It was the Battle of Benoni on the cricket field this past weekend.

Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s (BNCC) Premier League XI made it an Eastern Premier League one, two, three, after they earned their third victory in succession with a five-wicket, bonus point win in the Benoni cricket derby against Actonville Spurs Cricket Club (ASCC) on October 28.

The BNCC team travelled to Lords Cricket ground in Actonville confident after two league wins against Tembisa and Alberton while ASCC were boosted by a close win over Bedfordview the Sunday prior.

BNCC skipper Kurt Francis won the morning coin toss and elected to bowl first, a move which he believes put his side immediately on the front foot.

The Northerns bowlers were patient as they eventually bowled out the Actonville batsmen for 132 in 39.2 overs.

ASCC skipper and Easterns amateur player Imraan Manack offered the most threat with the bat for the home team with 42 runs from 46 deliveries.

Quick opening BNCC bowler Kundai Matigimu delivered the goods for his team on the morning with excellent figures of 3/18 in his 10 overs. A brace of wickets apiece from fellow opening bowler Stefan Jordaan and young leg-spinner WP Myburgh helped to get the job done.

With the bat, BNCC found themselves in a spot of trouble at 20/3, but again it was the left-handed opening batsman Vaughn Humphrey (60 runs from 46 balls) who shone with the willow, scoring his second half-century in seven days for BNCC.

He formed a strong 101-run partnership with number five batsman Leonard Killian (44 runs from 42 deliveries) as they worked towards the target.

Both were dismissed later on, but Francis and Myburgh got the visitors over the line in the end. Hussain Shakeel Ahmed was the best ASCC bowler in the match with figures of 3/38 in six overs.

BNCC are in for a tough encounter in their next fixture away to CBC Old Boys in Boksburg.

ASCC will also play in Boksburg on Sunday against Boksburg Cricket Club.

Meanwhile, in the Premier Reserve team, both Benoni clubs met at Northern Areas on Sunday.

Northerns won the match by 183 runs.

A day earlier, in the Easterns Women’s League, a record-breaking day ensued on October 27 at Northern Areas.

BNCC’s women’s team beat Tembisa by a record 352 runs in their 35-over league match.

The team scored a massive 380/4 and then bowled out the Tembisans for just 28 runs.

The stand out performance belonged to Lila Nell with a massive 163 off 97 balls, breaking the record for the most runs by a batswoman in an innings for Benoni Northerns.
