Daveyton NPO empowers the youth

The centre has 21 staff members of which two are social workers and 15 are caregivers.

Developing future leaders and uplifting the community is what the Kamohelo Community Development Centre prides itself in doing.

The Daveyton non-profit organisation provides an after-school programme for primary school learners in the community.

They also assist children with extramural activities and provide them with a meal.

The centre also enables disadvantaged youth to pull themselves out of poverty by doing a health and welfare course provided by the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA).

Interact youth make a difference and get rewarded

Founder and project manager Joy Morotolo said the centre started in 2008 but was registered in 2010.

“The centre was started with the aim of taking children off the streets, giving them a place where they can be safe and giving them something positive to do during school holidays,” said Morotolo.

Morotolo explained the strategies they use to facilitate learners involve a method of teaching where learners bring the homework or work they are struggling with to the after-school programme where they are assisted by volunteer tutors.

“We work with the schools so we can know which learner needs support so we can provide them with the necessary support,” she said.

The centre has 21 staff members of which two are social workers and 15 are caregivers.

“Some of our staff members started as volunteers who now get a stipend so they can also put food on the table for their families.”

Morotolo said their caregivers also do home visits because some of the learners’ parents or guardians are sick or they struggle to make ends meets so they visit them to see how they can support them.

The centre mostly depends on donations and any donations of non-perishable items, clothes, stationery, toiletries, cleaning detergents and volunteers are also welcome.

Morotolo urged businesses to help them make the children’s dream of visiting an airport or the beach a reality.

Donations can be dropped off at the centre on 10221 Hlakwane Street, Daveyton.
