Benoni SPCA confiscates five pit bull terriers

"Animal cruelty will not be tolerated" is the message from the Benoni SPCA

The Benoni SPCA confiscated a pit bull and four puppies from a home in Wattville on October 17.

According to SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore, the pit bull was severely neglected and had been living in a confined space that was rarely cleaned.

“She lived in isolation and had been used for breeding.

“The dog was found to be dreadfully underweight and is undergoing veterinary treatment for biliary and dehydration.

“The puppies have all been treated for internal and external parasites and are otherwise healthy.

“The owner of these animals was given a fair chance to rectify the conditions his animals were found in but failed to adhere,” Finnemore said.

Benoni SPCA reiterated that the society does not give second chances to abusive or neglectful owners and has zero tolerance for animal cruelty.

Finnemore said the pit bull is a breed that is often misunderstood and is actually a good natured, family-oriented breed.

“The majority of dog confiscations in Benoni involve pit bulls,” said Finnemore.

“Irresponsible dog trading from backyard breeding is the result of this magnificent breed living chained up and scarred with broken spirits.

“We urge the public to take responsibility for their pets and sterilise them.”

Finnemore also took the opportunity to thank the public for their contributions.

“We would like to thank the public for the wonderful support we’ve received after the confiscation of these animals.”

The Benoni SPCA is looking for more committee members to assist with fundraising.
