No end in sight for Pretoria Road

Pretoria road still incomplete

Frustration continues on Pretoria Road as the contractor fails to meet the deadline on October 12 and cannot provide a new date for completion.

When the City Times contacted the contractor, we were told that should they not meet the deadline, they would have to face penalties.

On October 15, the project was still incomplete.

According to the contractor, who would not like to be named, the roadworks were stopped due to the subcontractor demanding more money, which had already been paid to them by the municipality.

The stopping of the project allegedly led to a physical altercation, where Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Policing Department (EMPD) officers were called for assistance.

Ward 27 councillor Jacques Meiring confirmed that EMPD officers were on the scene.

“We called the EMPD to come help monitor the situation and get the subcontractor to open the gates,” said Meiring.

“This is not the first time that this is happening. They are already behind schedule and if they continue to do this we will continue to bring in re-enforcements.”

Meiring stated that the subcontractor is not allowed to stop the project and they should follow the correct procedure when addressing civil matters related to the contractor or client.

According to the contractor, a meeting was held with all the parties involved and they are waiting for a response from the client regarding what steps need to be taken for the project to be complete.

Roadworks on Pretoria Road began in February of this year with the date for completion being moved due to a number of reasons.

According to the contractor, a shortage of material, issues relating to the budget and strikes by the subcontractor were some of the factors that led to the delays.

The City Times has been monitoring the progress of the project, along with residents and businesses, voicing out their frustration with regards to the completion of the project.
