Mr and Miss Benoni 2018

New Mr and Miss Benoni 2018 crowned at the Kopanong Hotel and Conference Centre

Mr and Miss Benoni 2018 was held at the Kopanong Hotel and Conference Centre on October 14.

Caitlyn Wright and Charl Steyn were crowned as the winners of this year’s pageant.

The pageant has been hosted by Rampage Modelling Agency for the last 25 years.

Miss Benoni has been running for the last 40 years and 12 years ago Mr Benoni was included in the pageant.

According to Claudine Stuart, co-owner of Rampage modelling Agency, entries were well received this year, the youth of Benoni is definitely recognising the importance of the community side of the pageant.

“This year we supported The Almond Tree Baby Home and the Knights Charity Organisation,” she said.

“We, unfortunately, cannot put an exact value to the amounts brought in as its very difficult to decide how much was sponsored in goods.

“From clothes, fridges, nappies, etc and the cash donated we estimate about R120 000 was raised.”

This year 16 sponsors were on board.

Stuart said 29 of the contestants were from Benoni, the other three were from neighbouring Benoni towns but work or study in Benoni.

“This year our standard of entrants was exceptionally high.

“Only three of the contestants had entered prior. The dedication received from this year’s group was amazing,” said Stuart.

According to Stuart, attendance from the sponsors and contestants’ family and friends was very good although they did not have as much support as they had in previous years.

Stuart said contestants enter the competition at quite a young age and get taken out of their comfort zone.

“We watch them grow into outspoken, confident adults, they not only create a bond and become a family, but they also outgrow themselves into what Benoni would be very proud to call their youth,” she said.

“Their eyes get opened to what the community of Benoni requires and hopefully they take this outlook with them for many years to follow.’’

When asked why she believes Caitlyn and Charl are deserving winners, she said they were thrilled with the choice of this year’s Mr and Miss Benoni.

“Caitlyn and Charl are going to be a power couple this year,” said Stuart.

“Their dedication to the competition was amazing, they made the effort to attend all the rehearsals and functions.”

Stuart added their passion for fund-raising throughout the competition was admirable.

“They are both amazing youngsters and most definitely perfect role models for the youth of Benoni.

“They are already getting together and planning future fund-raising events for Benoni and are willing to be supportive of all Benoni businesses who would require their help as well.”

A total amount of almost R315 000 in prizes was won by the contestants in different categories.

Activities contestants were involved in the build-up to the finale included:

On September 1 semi-finals were held at Sesfigile Logistics, on September 15 there was a photo shoot.

On September 22 contestants visited The Almond Tree Baby Home.

On September 29 there were scuba try-outs at the Splash H2O Dive Academy.

On October 6 contestants had lunch at Fahrenheit Seafood & Grill.

Rehearsals were attended twice a week for five weeks.
