Over 200 illegal shacks demolished in Daveyton

The EMPD will closely monitor the area to ensure that no shacks are built in the area again.

Over 200 illegally erected shacks were demolished in Daveyton in a joint operation following the dwellers ignoring two evacuation orders.

“The orders were served on those who decided to erect shacks beyond the set demarcation at Gabon informal settlement,” said EMPD spokesperson chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

“The Gabon informal settlement is situated along Holfontein Road, just off the N12 freeway.”

According to Kgasago, when the two months’ grace period afforded to the transgressors was ignored, EMPD Daveyton precinct officers and the Red Ants flattened the illegal structures and confiscated the materials. Some owners were not on site during the operation.

“The boundary was fixed where people may not erect shacks as the area is unsuitable for human habitation due to its propensity for flooding,” Kgasago said.
