Germiston Fire Station opened on October 5

Revamped fire station opens in Germiston

The Ekurhuleni metro’s executive mayor, Mzwandile Masina, officially opened the multi-million Rand, state-of-the-art Germiston Fire Station on October 5, since work began in 2015.

The newly built structure amounted to R56.6-million, which Masina said, is an investment to the business, community and citizens at large, not forgetting neighbouring cities as well.

It will serve the Germiston CBD, Germiston Precinct, the Ekurhuleni Mining Belt, Dukathole and Good Hope informal settlements, Rand Airport and industrial areas surrounding Germiston.

The newly refurbished fire station will have enough parking space to accommodate a Hydraulic Platform (HP) Fire Engine, a Water Tanker Fire Engine, a Major Water Pumper Fire Engine, a smaller Grass Unit Fire Engine used for confined spaces and at least three ambulances.

The station is strategically designed for easy access for the fire engine during and after responding to the calls.

Masina also launched the fleet that included 37 ambulances, two Major Pumpers with 4 000 litre tank capacity, two water tankers with 10 000 litre tank capacity each, one major rescue pumper only used to carry rescue equipment, one rescue pumper with 4 000 litre tank capacity.

A brand new Hydraulic Platform “Bronto Sky Lighter” fire engine was among the fleet, reaching a height of 37m.

Emergency Services demonstrated the water transfer system at Germiston Lake.

The system can transfer water from the open source to a distance of about five kilometres in a high pressure for a sustainable supply at the major fire scenes.

The system can supply about eight fire engines with enough pressure for the entire operation on the scene.

The Water Ambassador, which is one of the equipment put to practice, can discharge 24 000 litres per minute at the pressure of above 10 bars (1 000 KPA) through the supply of eight 100mm diameter hoses at once.
