MMC for Community Safety Councillor Vivienne Chauke has condemned the attack on the City’s firefighters who were attacked over the weekend at Emaphupheni Extension 19, in Etwatwa.
One of the firefighters was injured after the fire engine they were travelling in was pelted with stones and a window was broken.
Chauke said the incident happened after two firefighters were dispatched from Etwatwa Fire Station to a burning house in the area.
“On arrival, they were prevented from proceeding to the scene by some community members, and later while negotiating for access, another group arrived and started stoning the fire engine,” said Chauke.
“It is weird that our firefighters risk their own lives fighting raging fires to save our communities and their assets to then be attacked by the same communities.”
Chauke encourages communities to be of assistance to firefighters or any other emergency services personnel and desist from being elements of obstruction and distraction at a time when that can least be afforded.
“The City is constantly losing huge amounts of money due to vehicles and other equipment being damaged during these incidents,” she said.
“Medical bills for injured personnel are also unnecessarily accumulated from these uncalled for attacks.”
