Listen: Friends may cease to exist

The club, which recently celebrated its 15th year, attempted to raise funds for the Benoni Library for the donation of books for the adult fiction and children’s sections.

An attempt to raise funds for the Benoni Library was “disappointing to say the say the least” according to The Friends of the Benoni Library, who held a Book Bash on September 28 and 29.

Books bashes are held every three to four months as a means to generate funds for donations.

“We’ve had a low turnout and it’s rather alarming,” said club member, Ann Smith.

“A lot of work goes into the book bashes and we have noticed a general decrease in the past two years but this was by far our worst turnout ever.”

Smith explained that without the support of the Benoni community, the work they are so fond of doing may soon be a mere memory.

“We need donations of books and we need people to buy them as the public is our lifeline,” said Smith.

“We have an excellent array of books that are in good condition.

“Unfortunately if this trend continues we may have to stop what we love to do and the Friends will cease to exist.”

The club provides a significant quantity of reading material to the Benoni Library as another member, Christine Drake, pointed out.

According to the Friends, tens of thousands of books have passed through them, giving regular numbers of new and second-hand books to the library.

“If the Friends cease to exist then the number of fiction books in the library will reduce significantly and the children’s library will also be affected,” said Drake.

Smith and Drake called on the Benoni public to take action and intervene by helping the Friends with their mission.
