Low water pressure a big problem for residents in Brentwood Park

Water shortage in Brentwood Park continues

Residents of Village Walk Retirement Village and Villa Victoria in Brentwood Park are tired of struggling with low water pressure or no water over the years.

Bradley Oosthuizen, who has been living in Brentwood Park since March, said if he does not take a shower at 5.30am, he will only have an adequate amount of water to shower in the evening.

“Every day, without fail, we have no water for a few hours and many times especially over weekends; there is no water at all sometimes for up to three days,” said Steven Green, owner of one of the units at Villa Victoria.

“We are taking water from the pool, or keeping water bottles filled just to wash dishes or to have drinking water.”

According to Green, the situation has gotten to the point where residents have resorted to going to family members in other areas to take a bath or shower.

Green said the issue has been addressed at council meetings for about three years, and the situation has gotten worse with more complexes being built in the area.

“It would appear they have authorised another complex on the corner of Kirschner Road, so I guess after that we will have no water at all,” he said.

Green said the only solution is to replace the water pipes with bigger pipes to accommodate the size of the area.

Ward 23 councillor, André du Plessis, agreed with Green’s sentiments and said there is an inadequate water infrastructure in Brentwood Park.

According to du Plessis, this is due to the additional townhouse complexes being approved and developed in an area that was previously an agricultural area.

Du Plessis said these complexes are linked into existing old inadequate and failing pipe infrastructure.

“This issue has been gradually becoming worse over the past ten years as more complexes spring up along Kirschner Road,” he said.

Possible sewage leak into Homestead concerns councillors to du Plessis, the Village Walk Retirement Village has Jojo water tanks into which they pump water.

In the past week, the ward councillor has been inundated with calls, emails and messages from residents reporting the issue to the municipality.

According to du Plessis, the Benoni water department teams have attempted to establish if it is simply a situation of uncontrolled pressure release valves or air locks within the system. However, they have been unsuccessful.

“There are hundreds of residents and three old age homes and a primary school which are severely affected on a daily basis by this debacle,” said du Plessis.

Du Plessis said he has approached the Ekurhuleni metro for a permanent solution to the issue at hand

He has not received any assistance thus far.

The metro was approached for comment, but no response was received at the time of going to print.
