Benoni SPCA confiscates 105 animals from breeder

The animals removed included dogs, parrots, ducks and rabbits.

On September 11 the Benoni SPCA confiscated a total of 105 animals from a breeder in Benoni North Agricultural Holdings.

The SPCA’s action occurred after a complaint was received concerning neglected Great Danes and went out to investigate the complaint.

According to the SPCA, severe animal neglect was found on the property and the animals were removed the next day.

The animals were allegedly found living in horrendous conditions with many of them sick and/or injured.

“Some of the dogs removed had received very little human interaction and were terrified when handled and some hadn’t even been given names,” the report stated.

The SPCA euthanased the diseased and badly injured animals as recommended by their veterinarians.

In the report, the SPCA said the loss of life was considered an act of mercy after the suffering the animals endured.

“SPCAs around the country are often criticised for having to euthanise thousands of unwanted dogs and cats every year,” said Benoni SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore.

“This confiscation is a perfect example of why the SPCAs are stuck with this devastating task.

“As long as the public continues to support disreputable breeders and pet shops the cruelty continues.”

Criminal charges of animal abuse will be laid against the breeder.

The Benoni SPCA is still in possession of Great Danes, rabbits and parrots.

An appeal to the public for financial assistance with the boarding, feeding and veterinary costs of the animals was made by the SPCA.
