Understanding art makes you an artist too
Often people overlook works of art because they think only a certain type of individual has an eye for art.
This is according to artist Jancke Combrink, who gave a talk on art to members of the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora at the Benoni Country Club on August 15.
He said if you can identify the five formal elements that an artist uses, that makes you an artist.
The five formal elements are colour, shape and form, tonal value, lines and texture.
According to the Combrink, colours, shape and texture can affect a person’s mood and gave descriptions of the elements and how artists use these to create an artwork.
Tonal value is the difference between black and white and grey lines.
“The eye perceives tonal value by seeing the dark colours before seeing the light colours.

“This has a lot to do with the two poles that exist in the universe, which can be described as rough and smooth, good and bad.
“Such elements allow the artist to use balance to create stability in their artwork.
“Line creates meaning whereas shapes and forms are geometric.
“We get this from how we perceive things in life,” Combrink said.
“These five elements are what you see as soon as you open your eyes before you recognise where you are.”
According to Combrink, when you take time to analyse a particular object, the lines, texture and colour are what helps you identify what that object is.
Artists can paint two-dimensional work, which is usually on a flat surface made up of width and height and three dimensional, made up of width, height and depth.
“Art is a reflection of an artist’s life and their background,” he said.
Combrink said when looking at an artist’s piece, you need to ask yourself why has the artist made this particular piece and what does it mean to me.
Like language, art is a form of communication.
The artist’s intention has to be clear through the art piece.
