Rental tenants and indigent status

The City of Ekurhuleni’s revised indigent policy came into effect from July 1.

The policy makes provision for a packaged free services to the indigents registered on the municipal database. Among other benefits, the free indigent services include free 9kl water, 9kl sanitation and 50kwh electricity.

The minimum income threshold for qualification as an indigent has increased from R3 200 to R5 090 to extend more basic services to destitute residents with low income.

The free basic services such as free 6kl water, 6kl sanitation and 50kwh electricity will continue to be given to non-indigent residents with house property value of less than R750 000.

Residents who are tenants in the city’s rental housing stock already benefit from the basket of benefits packaged for regular indigent programme beneficiaries.

They already receive free basic water, sanitation, refuse removal and an allocation of free electricity units. Their rental lease amount is also subsidised and is below market rates.

Therefore, tenants in the city’s rental housing stock need not apply to be enlisted in the indigent programme due to the above-mentioned reasons as they already benefit from the programme.

Willowmoore student wins

The City of Ekurhuleni is leveraging the partnerships with other government departments and the private sector to break barriers that hinder young girls to enter male-dominated work careers.

As part of the initiative, the municipality hosted a symposium in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) and the private sector on August 13 and 14. This is to enlighten young school girls that they can crack it in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics career fields. The event took place at the Alberton West Gallery Hall.

Women who are professionals and own companies in these fields were invited to encourage the 150 high school girls in attendance.

One of the guest speakers at the event, Lindiwe Dladla kaMkhonza, director of Chiefkazi Investment Port, ran a competition for the young girls to win a trip to accompany her to the United States of America for the sitting of the United Nation Commission on the status of Women in March 2019.

Zaheeia Adam from Willowmore High School won the trip.

Adam said attending the symposium and having had an opportunity to listen to other women who have made it against odds was a motivation in itself. However, getting the opportunity to sit with other imminent women at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women was mind-blowing.

Entrepreneur event a scam

The office of the executive mayor Mzwandile Masina has noted with concern a poster circulating on social media about an event allegedly organised for entrepreneurs using the name of the municipality as a sponsor.

The organisers on the poster allege there is some partnership with Ekurhuleni and “calls on suppliers and entrepreneurs” to partake in the event at a fee.

Masina condemns this in the strongest possible terms, and an investigation is underway to trace the organisers. If there is an official in Ekurhuleni who has consented to the usage of the metro’s brand, action will be taken.

The municipality has embarked on programmes and road shows such as Ntirishano, partnering with SEDA and the Gauteng Provincial Government, to raise awareness about opportunities in the municipality.

All these activities are done at no cost to the public.
