Feeding the homeless at the Benoni Plaza

A little bit of love and care goes a long way

Siyabonga Africa runs a programme called Street to Feet.

The project feeds about 70 people every Tuesday at the Benoni Plaza.

Apart from feeding the homeless, the programme involves getting help for those who are addicted to drugs to get into a rehabilitation centre and be reunited with their families.

“We want to put out a request to a doctor to help with filling out the medical forms for people to get into rehab,” said Carol Mofokeng, Street to Feet manager.

The homeless are given a full meal, along with a blanket, a beanie and gloves that were donate by PEP Store and The National Lottery.

Mofokeng said the public should not fear the homeless that live there.

“All we need to do is to help them get clean and get them back on track. That way the plaza can also be clean,” she said.

Moshiwa Dondolo is one of the young men living at the plaza.

He has been living there for more than two years after moving out of his home in Daveyton.

“I miss home. I want to go back,” he said.

“The police accuses me of all sorts of crimes even when I’m just sitting, doing nothing as they drive past.”

Dondolo is addicted to nyaope and would like to go to rehab in order to change his life.

The 20-year-old stopped going to school when he was in Grade 10 in 2013.

Dondolo is one of many who have been turned away from the clinic after requesting for a doctor to fill out a medical form in order for him to be admitted into a rehabilitation centre.

“No doors are being opened at all,” he said.

The Street to Feet Programme is also run in Springs, Brakpan and Boksburg North.
