There is a ripple effect to kindness

Four elderly people were treated to an unexpected paid bill at Ocean Basket.

In a world often filled with negatives, it is always heartwarming to see good deeds being done, whether in a form of donations, a helping hand or … paying for a stranger’s restaurant meal.

This act of kindness has indeed taken place not once, but twice, at a restaurant at a local shopping centre, in the past few months.

Rynpark residents Jean (75) and Ray (78) Downing were the most recent recipients of this unbelievable gesture when they visited the restaurant to enjoy a lunch on June 24.

The couple said they decided to treat themselves to lunch that day as they do not go out as often as they would like to.

LETTER: People still care about each other

“We ordered two platters for one and my husband had a beer and I had a cold drink,” Jean said.

“The bill would have been R300 or thereabouts.

“To our amazement, when we asked our waiter, David, for our bill, he told us that it had been settled by another couple at the restaurant,” Jean said.

According to Jean, she has never in her life experienced such a kind gesture.

“There are definitely very kind people out there,” she said.

“David had been asked not to tell us and we are not sure who the person is who paid, but our waiter deduced from the credit card slip that the name was D Oosthuizen.

“Thank you, thank you! This was the best surprise my husband and I have ever had and we are so grateful for your kindness.”

Another kind gesture of the same nature, which was published on the City Times’ opinion page a few weeks ago, came from a LC Olivier who paid for the lunch of two retired friends, at the same restaurant, in April.

In the letter, Mike Hefer stated that he and a friend decided to grab a bite at the restaurant after doing some shopping.

When the bill arrived, a woman, who was sitting nearby with her friend, paid the friends’ bill.

“Needless to say, my friend and I were both dumbstruck as such a wonderful and kind gesture has never happened to either of us before,” Hefer said in his letter to the City Times.

“Our most sincere appreciation and thanks for your most wonderful and kind gesture. Words really cannot describe how awesome it was to be on the receiving end of your generosity.”
