Seven out of 16 EMPD vehicles are non-operational
Clarke calls the limited resources unacceptable.
Only nine out of 16 EMPD vehicles are operational according to DA constituency head in Benoni, Michele Clarke.
“This was revealed by the MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Uhuru Moiloa, in a written reply to the DA questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature,” Clarke said.
“This is unacceptable as it impacts negatively on service delivery and crime-fighting initiatives in the area.”
According to Clarke, illegal mining is a crime that needs to be dealt with, and considering the fact that this precinct is in a mining area where illegal mining is taking place, there is a dire need for increased police visibility.
“According to the MEC, five EMPD vehicles are in the workshop, two were scrapped due to accident damage and now the Benoni EMPD precinct is left with only nine vehicles,” she said.
“The sustainability of businesses and the safety of the community is now being put at risk.”
The DA called on both Moiloa and Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina to ensure that there are enough EMPD vehicles in Benoni to effectively deal with crime.
The EMPD were contacted regarding the above and the City Times is awaiting their response.
