Haleem is once again served in Actonville during Ramadan

Feeding the community of Actonville

Thousands of people flocked to the Buzme Adab Hall in Actonville on June 10 to fill up their containers with Haleem, a soup which is only cooked during Ramadan.

In the true spirit of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Muslim calendar, an organisation founded by Abdul Gaffoor Shaik started the annual cooking of Haleem 40 years ago in Actonville.

Volunteers and sponsors assist with the cooking and distribution of Haleem every Sunday during Ramadan, with this past weekend being the final day on which the soup was handed out.

Under the leadership and guidance of Shaik, with the support of Feroz Gany, the initial few pots have increased to 40 pots over the past few decades and is distributed to all in need, regardless of race and religion.

According to Shaik, this initiative has grown in leaps and bounds, with the pots feeding 38 000 people from the Actonville community and surrounding areas.

Shaik said this once a year initiative has grown in stature through the grace of the Almighty and the support of the volunteers and sponsors, and the initial goal of sharing, togetherness, and community awareness definitely has reached its fruition.

“We thank everyone for their contribution and support to this yearly drive,” said Shaik

“Insha Allah we pray, that through the grace of the Almighty this initiative continues for generations to come.”

Shaik wished City Times Muslim readers Eid Mubarak.
