‘Wheels come off’ in Primrose for BNFC firsts as the seconds march on

It went from good to bad for the Northerns boys.

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League team will need to find a morale boost from somewhere if they are to win the Benoni Football Derby on June 9.

This comes after the team experienced a poor second half away to table-topping Luso Africa at Hattingh Park in Primrose on June 2.

Coach Jannie van den Berg’s young team enjoyed a solid, competitive first half in Primrose and headed into the half-time break confident at 1-1.

After a relatively decent first 15 minutes of the second stanza, ‘the wheels came off’, van den Berg told the City Times.

The team found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-2 result, with midfielder Mothoka ‘Stoaney’ Moeketsi bagging a brace for the visiting BNFC team.

“It was one of those games of two halves,” said the coach.

“We played well and competitively in that first half and for the early stages of the second half.

“I thought we had the better chances in that good patch, but the youngsters lost concentration.

“Again it comes down to a lack of experience because we have so many young players still finding their feet in this team.

“When the pressure is on we seem to make the wrong decisions and we find ourselves out of positions.

“That is something we will be working on during training this week.

“The boys are a bit demoralised after the defeat, especially after being so enthusiastic at half-time, but that’s sport and we’ll need to bounce back this weekend in the derby.”

Meanwhile, in the preceding encounter, coach Darren ‘Fish’ Lee and his Super League Reserve XI extended their lead at the top of the ELFA Super Reserve League by four points after they defeated Luso Africa (their closest rivals, in second place on the log) 1-0.

They’ll be aiming for nothing but a win to maintain their lead when they face Old Bens this weekend.

The Benoni Derbies will be played at Old Bens on Saturday.

The reserve sides kick off at 1.45pm, which will be followed by the first team clash at 3.30pm.
