Aiden will soon return to SA

Success for brave Aiden after undergoing three operations already.

There is light at the end of the tunnel for young Aiden da Silva who raised enough funds for his operations in Switzerland.

According to his mother, Jade da Silva, the six-year-old underwent his first operation on May 7, his main operation on May 8 and a follow-up procedure on May 14.

The da Silva family brought Aiden’s condition to the attention of The City Times because he needed about R1-million to undergo complex operations in Switzerland.

According to Jade, a medical report was sent to the da Silva family after doctors from Switzerland watched videos of Aiden’s scope and the report revealed he had a severe degree of supraglottic stenosis and a moderate degree of laryngeal stenosis (this is part of the airway that is above the vocal cords which is narrowed).

Aiden has difficulty in speaking so it makes it hard for people to understand what he says.

He is also fed through a peg (feeding tube) due to his epiglottis being lame.

The youngster underwent about 60 operations in South Africa before his trip abroad.

“Aiden’s operations were long but successful and doctors are very happy with Aiden,” Jade said.

“So far, we have an eight-week recovery process and will have to stay here in Europe.”

This puts the da Silva family at a return home in July.

“Aiden is doing so well and we will be removing his stent in four weeks (June) and then we will start the process of removing his tracheostomy,” Jade said on May 21.

“They also did a nine-hour operation where they took parts of his rib cage and rebuilt his airway and reconstructed his epiglottis and other areas, as well as three scopes.”

The da Silva family is grateful for the generosity of Benonians and everyone who opened their hearts to make this trip possible for Aiden.
