Rugby sides sunk by VUT students again

Despite some progress from the week before the boys could not get the better of VUT.

Benoni Northerns Rugby Club’s second and first teams suffered their second defeats to the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in as many weeks when they met at Northern Areas for Valke Merlin League clashes on May 26.

The second team lost 33-27 to the students from the Vaal Triangle.

They were trailing 19-5 in the first half with VUT hitting them with speed on the counter-attack.

The seconds found an injection of energy in the last 15 minutes and scored four tries, the forwards establishing dominance once fresh legs were introduced to the game.

Despite this purple patch from Benoni, VUT had a big enough lead to see out the victory.

Had they slotted all their conversions it could have been a different tale to share.

Dyllan Grobler scored a hat-trick of tries while Erik van Eeden and Kevin Venter also dotted down.

Venter scored a conversion

The first team was defeated 43-19, despite putting in a strong effort.

VUT capitalised on every small mistake made by the Benonians and their backs punished the hosts through sheer speed.

Jesse Bekker scored a brace of tries while player and chairperson Lourens Smit also scored a try.

Jay Botha and Gerald van der Venter each scored a conversion.

The Benoni teams travel to Nigel on June 2 for what should be two difficult matches.
