Big two weeks ahead for Benoni Northerns FC

The three points are welcomed, but not ideal ahead of a tough schedule.

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s first XI picked up all three points for their Eastern Local Football Association (Elfa) Super League fixture without even kicking a ball on May 26.

The team was scheduled to play Corinthians at Northern Areas on Saturday afternoon, but their opponents could not field a team due to ‘transport troubles’.

This means that coach Jannie van den Berg’s young side was granted an automatic 2-0 ‘walkover’ result.

Although happy to get the points, van den Berg said that he would have preferred his young team to have played ahead of a tough fortnight of matches.

His team next plays undefeated league-leaders Luso Africa in Primrose on June 2, which will be followed by the Benoni Football Day against great rivals, Old Bens, at Currin Park on June 9.

Even though their opponents did not pitch, the coach still ensured that his players got some practice.

Two days prior to that, under lights and away, they played Kempton Park.

His young side drew 2-2 with a strong Kempton outfit, which featured a number of Vodacom League players.

Meanwhile, reserve team coach Darren ‘Fish’ Lee will be delighted with his team’s last two results.

They maintained their second-placed position behind Luso Africa in the ELFA Super Reserve League with a 3-2 win in the earlier match last Thursday night and after a commanding 6-2 win against Corinthians on Saturday.
