LETTER: People still care about each other

Words really cannot describe how awesome it was to be on the receiving end of your generosity.

Mike Hefer, Benoni, writes:

If we look around us, it becomes very hard to say that people still care for their fellow human beings and we have all become so isolated in our own little spaces.

Yes, there are many valid reasons for thinking that way and most of us have lost faith in the goodwill of mankind.

Residents do it for their neighbourhood

However, a few weeks ago this whole argument was shattered in the most pleasant and totally unexpected way.

A friend and I went and did some shopping at the Oakfields Shopping Centre and when it got close to lunchtime, we decided to go and have a bite to eat at a restaurant there.

We had a pleasant meal, chatted a lot, and as we are both retired and have plenty of time on our hands, we thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing meal.

The restaurant was not overly busy and there were a few tables occupied and one could notice it was mostly people there enjoying a relaxing time in the company of friends or family maybe.

When we had finished our meal, I called for the bill and as the waiter brought it to our table, a lady who was there with her friend at a nearby table jumped up and took our bill.

I protested and said it is my bill and I wish to pay it, but this lady was adamant (with a big smile) and said that she wanted to pay our bill.

Again I protested and said I had the money to pay, but she was so persistent. She handed her credit card to the waiter and paid for our meal and drinks. After she had paid, she went back to the table with her friend and continued chatting as if nothing has happened.

Needless to say, my friend and I were both dumbstruck as such a wonderful and kind gesture has never happened to either of us before.

We left the restaurant and I think in my state of shock I mumbled some kind of thanks to the lady in question.

My reason for writing this is that I want to publicly thank this lady whose kind and generous gesture restored two elderly people’s faith that a lot of goodwill still exists.

So Mrs LC Olivier, who had lunch with a friend at this restaurant on April 17 at about 1pm, our sincerest appreciation and thanks for your most wonderful and kind gesture.
