Driven to make a difference

They also focus on empowering the youth.

Community Driven Initiatives (CDI) is a non-profit organisation (NPO) which was started by four men determined to help the community.

Having previously been involved in a number of similar projects, Ryan Dyer, David Burrows, Freek Prinsloo and Keagan le Grange got together and started the NPO.

“The aim is to help the community help itself,” le Grange said.

“We do this by working with community leaders who already show initiative but lack financial backing. We help them with start-up capital.”

They also focus on empowering the youth.

“Through education, the youth are encouraged to do something, which will have a positive impact on their economic freedom,” he said.

The organisation assists schools financially by providing them with sporting facilities that will better their environment.

Le Grange said: “By playing team sports children will be able to create long-lasting relationships.

“This also helps to keep children active and healthy.”

The CDI team are currently helping to raise funds to upgrade Nkangala Primary School, in Transkei.

On May 10 they held a fund-raiser event at the Green Craft Bar in Benoni to raise awareness about the organisation and raise funds for the upgrades to the school.

Being Benonians, Dyer Burrows and le Grange would like to do more projects in the community.

One of the organisations they will be working with is the Daveyton Book Club.

“We would also like to do a sanitary pad drive and start teaching people in the community about micro-gardening,” said le Grange.

“This will help them to grow and sell their own produce to other members of the community.”

Le Grange encourages the community to get involved by donating books, blankets, clothes food and sponsorships.

“Whether it’s R1 or one million, every cent counts,” he said.
